Calibration
What is calibration?
Every breathalyzer, regardless of type or method, needs regular calibration to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Calibration is the process of checking a breathalyzer's accuracy by comparing its readings against a reference value, and adjusting it when needed to maintain accuracy and performance.
For example, when a calibrator presents a 0.050 %BAC reference alcohol sample to the breathalyzer, calibration means setting the device so it reads exactly 0.050 %BAC.
Calibration Methods
Breathalyzer calibration is divided into dry gas and wet gas methods, depending on the type of reference gas or solution used.
Dry Gas Method
Uses a reference gas made by mixing moisture-free alcohol gas with inert nitrogen.
Wet Gas Method
Wet gas is made by mixing high-purity alcohol with water and diluting it to the reference concentration required for calibration.
The method used may vary with the type of breathalyzer and its operating environment.
Calibration Interval
A breathalyzer's accuracy and reliability are maintained through regular calibration at the interval the manufacturer recommends. Use the guidelines below to check your storage and operating conditions.
